Media: Demonstrations in Burkina Faso in Support of Transitional Government Take Place

27 September 2023

Mass demonstrations in support of Burkina Faso's transitional government are taking place in the capital, Ouagadougou, as reported by the local portal Burkina24. Thousands of young people have taken to the streets, heading towards the central square of the city. They are chanting slogans in support of Ibrahim Traore, the head of the transitional government. The demonstrations were sparked by unconfirmed reports of an attempted coup d'état circulating on local social networks.

Earlier, the publication Jeune Afrique reported that Ibrahim Traore had carried out a reshuffle within the National Intelligence Agency and the State Security Service due to attempts to destabilize the country, including from external sources. Several military officers associated with Traore were arrested on suspicion of conspiring against state security.

In response to Jeune Afrique's publication, the Burkina Faso authorities suspended the magazine until further notice, citing the publication of material that was seen as discrediting the national armed forces.
