Media: Egypt accused Israel of derailing ceasefire agreement with Palestinians

12 May 2023

Cairo believes that the Israeli authorities on Friday sabotaged an agreement on a possible truce with Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip. Al Arabiya TV reported this, citing diplomatic sources.

According to them, Israel "did not fulfill the agreement reached with it this morning." In this regard, the sources indicated that Egypt is currently considering "reducing its participation in the mediation talks with the Israeli side."

Earlier on Friday, the TV channel reported, Egyptian representatives, the most actively involved in the international mediation process, indicated that "work is underway to reach a truce agreement between Palestinian factions in Gaza and Israel within the next 48 hours."

Cairo reportedly proposed a six-point plan to the parties to the conflict. The initiative involved, among other things, the approval of the Palestinians in Gaza and the Israelis of the truce terms by the end of this year. In addition, according to the Egyptian plan, the Palestinian groups refused rocket attacks on Israel during the specified period, and the Israeli military - from point-by-point strikes in order to eliminate the leaders of resistance in Gaza, in particular the Islamic Jihad grouping. According to the sources, the Israeli side also agreed to this point, but refused to give clear guarantees on it.
