Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, during his upcoming visit to Germany on Friday, plans to seek support from the German leadership for Ankara's efforts to prosecute Israel for crimes against humanity committed in the Gaza Strip. This information is reported by the Milliyet newspaper, citing government sources.
According to the newspaper, the resolution of the conflict between Israel and Palestine will be a key agenda item in Erdogan's discussions with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Erdogan, as reported by Milliyet, plans to highlight the critical situation in Gaza, provide information on Turkey's endeavors to peacefully resolve the conflict, and express his expectation that Berlin will support Ankara in its efforts to achieve an early ceasefire.
The meetings will also address Turkey's negotiation process with the European Union, a bid for full membership pursued since 2005, and Ankara's 2016 agreement with the EU regarding migrants.
Germany is Turkey's largest trading partner in Europe, with trade turnover between the two countries reaching $45.2 billion in 2022 and anticipated to reach $50 billion by the end of 2023. Erdogan's last visit to Germany was in January 2020.
