Media: Erdogan to discuss normalization of Turkey-Armenia relations with Pashinyan

04 October 2022

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan will meet with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Prague on October 6 on the margins of the European Political Community summit. This was reported by the Sabah newspaper on Tuesday, citing its sources.

The Turkish leader, speaking in the parliament on October 1, mentioned the possibility of such a meeting.

At the talks, Sabah notes, it is planned to discuss the normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia. In particular, Erdogan is expected to offer Pashinyan to hold meetings of special envoys on the settlement of bilateral relations alternately in Turkey and Armenia, rather than in third countries. In addition, the Turkish leader will make proposals to reduce tensions in the region and sign a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan as soon as possible.

Despite the common border, Armenia and Turkey have no diplomatic relations. In 2009 in Zurich, the foreign ministers of the two states signed protocols to establish them, but the parties have not ratified these documents. On March 1, 2018, Armenia announced the cancellation of the protocols.

In 2021, both countries appointed special representatives for the settlement of bilateral relations. Representatives of Turkey and Armenia held a series of talks. At a meeting in Vienna on July 1, it was decided to allow third-country nationals to cross the Armenian-Turkish land border as soon as possible and to begin direct air transportation of goods between Armenia and Turkey.
