Media: Fighting Resumes in Western Sudan as Talks Commence in Jeddah

30 October 2023

Armed clashes have reignited in western Sudan between regular troops and rapid support forces (special forces), according to reports from Asharq citing local sources.

The confrontations are taking place in the state of Western Kordofan, although the reasons behind the clashes and any casualties remain unspecified.

Meanwhile, Sudan's army and special forces have resumed indirect discussions in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, mediated by the Saudi Foreign Ministry. The primary focus of these talks is expected to be the potential for a ceasefire and the prospects of achieving a permanent cessation of hostilities. The Sudanese army's delegation is led by Rear Admiral Mahjoub Bushra Ahmed, while the Rapid Support Force delegation is under the leadership of General Omar Hamdan.

Over the past six months, several rounds of consultations have been held in Jeddah between the two parties. While ceasefire agreements have been announced on numerous occasions, none have been fully implemented.
