Media: Iran responds to EU nuclear text

16 August 2022

The Iranian authorities have sent a response to the European Union (EU) to proposals to restore the nuclear deal, Al Jazeera reported on Monday evening, citing an Iranian official.

The content of the message was not disclosed. At the same time, ISNA news agency claims that the Iranian side's response was delivered to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, who in early August presented his draft agreement on the restoration of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to the negotiators. Tehran expects to receive a response from Brussels within two days, the agency's source said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said Monday that Tehran would give a written response to EU nuclear deal negotiator Enrique Mora on the European side's proposals by midnight local time (22:30 Moscow time).

On August 11, The Wall Street Journal reported that EU diplomats drafted the final text of a document on restoring the nuclear deal with the Islamic republic. According to this information, Brussels offered Tehran concessions in the issue of the investigation concerning the nuclear material discovered by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the origin of which the Iranian side did not explain.

The JCPOA was signed with Iran in 2015 to address the crisis over its nuclear developments by the permanent UN Security Council Five and Germany. In 2018, then-US President Donald Trump decided to withdraw from the arrangement. Current US leader Joe Biden has repeatedly signaled his willingness to bring Washington back into the nuclear deal with Tehran. Russia, Britain, Germany, China, the US and France have been negotiating with Iran in Vienna since last April to restore the JCPOA to its original form.
