Media: Israel to release 2,000 Palestinians in first stage of Hamas deal

17 January

The first stage of the agreement signed in Doha on January 16 between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas on the release of hostages and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip involves the release of 33 Israeli captives in exchange for 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. This was reported by The Jerusalem Post.

According to its information, the first stage of the deal will last 42 days, and the implementation of the agreement will begin two to three days after its signing. First, 33 hostages will be released: first women and children, then female soldiers, then men over 50 and young people who are defined as "humanitarian cases." In exchange, Israel will release 2,000 convicted terrorists held in its prisons, including about a thousand people detained after the events of October 7, 2023. About 250 of the Palestinian prisoners approved for exchange are serving life sentences. However, the deal will not release any of the terrorists who directly participated in the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the newspaper notes.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the signing of a deal on the release of hostages and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on January 16 in Doha by Israel, the Palestinian movement Hamas, the United States and Qatar. According to the office's statement, the security cabinet will convene to approve the agreement, followed by a full government meeting. The vote will take place on January 18.
