Media: It is getting harder for the US to support the myth that Russia will soon be defeated on the battlefield

06 March 2023

The US is finding it increasingly difficult to sustain the myth that Russia is about to be defeated and Ukraine is winning on the battlefield. That's the assessment in an article published Monday in Australia's leading newspaper, The Australian.

"The course of hostilities is such that Biden finds it increasingly difficult every day to maintain assurances that Ukraine is winning on the battlefield, because in fact more and more Ukrainian cities are turning into ruins, its soldiers are dying and millions of citizens are fleeing the country," the publication stresses.

The newspaper notes that the US fomented conflict in Ukraine "brings Washington ever closer to a catastrophic confrontation with Russia and China." "Excessive and unfounded criticism of [US President Joe] Biden against [Russian President] Vladimir Putin and Russia has already tied the future of the United States to the fate of Ukraine. Russian troops are slowly moving toward Artemovsk (the Ukrainian name for Bakhmut - TASS), contrary to all forecasts about the collapse of Russia or Putin's overthrow, and this conflict will become an unbearable burden for the American president before the 2024 elections, in which he plans to participate," writes the newspaper, pointing out that regardless of the outcome of the conflict, the very participation in its fomentation makes Biden's chances for reelection illusory.

The article also notes that behavior of Russia and the West led by the US is fundamentally different both before and during the military conflict. While Russia has consistently laid out its demands for Ukraine's unacceptability of NATO membership and the "vital importance of Crimea to its survival as a great power," the US president has repeatedly broken his promises. "Biden promised that there would be no tanks and no fighter jets, but tanks are on the way and fighter jet deliveries have been ruled out only for now," the publication states, pointing to the ease with which the commitment not to send American soldiers to defend the Kiev regime can be broken.
