Media: Pakistani Security Forces Thwart Terrorist Attack in Gwadar City

21 March

Pakistan's security forces successfully thwarted an attack launched by militants from the radical group Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) on a compound owned by the Gwadar Port management company. The Express Tribune reported the incident on Thursday.

According to the publication, a group of eight extremists associated with the banned nationalist organization BLA attempted to breach the administrative complex, which accommodates government offices and security agencies. The militants employed improvised explosive devices and small arms during the assault.

Security personnel stationed at the complex effectively repelled the attack, resulting in the elimination of all assailants. However, two army personnel lost their lives in the confrontation.

Tensions in Balochistan have escalated since late 2021 due to the heightened activities of nationalist and separatist groups opposing the Pakistani government's efforts to centralize the country. Extremist attacks pose a significant threat to the security of Gwadar seaport in the province, a crucial site under China's global  Belt and Road initiative, as well as other infrastructure projects in Pakistan supported by Chinese assistance.
