Media: Palestinian-Israeli Conflict Spurs New Security Threats in Africa

25 October 2023

African countries are expressing concerns about the potential negative consequences for their security in light of the escalating Palestinian-Israeli conflict, according to the American magazine Foreign Policy.

The article notes that Islamist armed groups may exploit the support of the Muslim population in African countries in response to Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip, which have generated public condemnation. For instance, the terrorist group "Al-Shabaab" in Somalia held solidarity events with the Gaza Strip. Demonstrations in support of Gaza took place in several countries, including Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Tunisia, and South Africa.

Experts draw parallels between the current situation surrounding the Gaza Strip and the aftermath of the assassination of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, which resulted in political instability in Libya and across Africa, an increase in uncontrolled arms trafficking on the continent, and the proliferation of terrorism in the Sahel region.

Analysts highlight that Egypt, which shares a direct border with the Gaza Strip, is particularly vulnerable in this context.
