Media: Parties in Yemen Conflict May Soon Conclude Peace Treaty

12 December 2023

The internationally recognized government of Yemen and the rebel movement "Ansar Allah" (Houthis) have received a draft peace treaty aimed at ending the long-standing conflict. The AlHadath TV channel reported, citing sources, that UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg has also received a copy of the document. According to the sources, Grundberg has commenced work on protocol issues to determine the place and time for signing the peace treaty.

Talks between the Ansar Allah delegation and Saudi representatives took place in Riyadh from September 14 to 19. The Houthis met with Saudi Arabia's Defense Minister, Prince Khaled bin Salman Al Saud. According to Reuters sources, "some progress" was made in discussions on key contentious issues, including the withdrawal of foreign forces from Yemen and the provision of social guarantees to the population in Houthi-controlled territory. Following the talks, the Saudi Foreign Ministry issued a statement praising "the results of important discussions on the development of a roadmap for the peace process in Yemen."

The conflict between government forces and Ansar Allah supporters has been ongoing in Yemen since August 2014, escalating in March 2015 with the invasion of the country by a coalition led by Saudi Arabia. While a truce was agreed upon in early April 2022, it expired on October 2 of the same year.
