Media Reports: Rebels in Niger to Accuse Bazoum of Treason

14 August 2023

The rebel-led military council plans to levy charges of treason against the ousted President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, as reported by Al Jazeera.

"We have collected evidence that enables us to pursue legal action against the removed president and his collaborators, charging them with treason and jeopardizing national security," the rebels stated, as quoted by the TV channel.

Upon his return from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) summit in Abuja on August 10, Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara stated that the leaders of member states had collectively agreed to initiate a military operation in Niger "as soon as possible." In response, rebel leaders have instructed their forces to be on high alert in anticipation of ECOWAS' announced plans for intervention.
