The Saudi foreign ministry summoned the ambassador of Sweden to protest the burning of a Quran near a mosque in Stockholm. Al Arabiya TV channel reported this on Monday.
"The Ministry of foreign affairs summoned the ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden and lodged a categorical protest on behalf of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia over the shameful act of burning the holy Quran," the TV channel quoted the Saudi foreign ministry as saying. The ministry called on the Swedish government to stop "all actions that directly contradict the efforts of the world community to spread the values of tolerance, moderation and rejection of extremism, as well as actions that undermine mutual respect, a necessary component of international relations."
The action took place with police permission on June 28 in Medborgarplatsen Square in central Stockholm. Then Salwan Momika, a 37-year-old immigrant from Iraq, tore pages from the Quran and set it on fire. On that day, Muslims around the world were celebrating Eid al-Adha (Kurban Bayram in Turkic languages), one of the main religious holidays in Islam.
