Media: Syria to Reinstate Vice Presidential Post

04 April

Syria is set to reinstate the position of vice president, according to Lebanese newspaper Al Nahar, which cited government sources in Damascus. The move comes under the authority of interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

Reports say that al-Sharaa plans to appoint his political adviser, Muayyad al-Kiblawi, to the role. Al-Kiblawi previously coordinated the preparatory committee for the National Dialogue Conference, which was held in Damascus on February 24–25 and brought together over 600 delegates from across the country.

Al-Kiblawi is a former founding member of the Syrian National Council, formed by political exiles who opposed former President Bashar al-Assad in 2011. That council later evolved into the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, which was officially dissolved in January 2025.

Before the power transition in Damascus in December 2024, both al-Sharaa and al-Kiblawi were based in Idlib province, a longtime stronghold of armed opposition groups.

The last person to hold the office of vice president in Syria was Faisal Mekdad, who served briefly from September 23 to December 8, 2024.
