On Friday, the Syrian army's artillery targeted the positions of militant groups in the northern part of Idlib province. The strikes were in response to the militants' violation of the ceasefire in the northern de-escalation zone, as reported by Al Watan newspaper.
The attack resulted in the destruction of enemy command posts and rear bases in the mountainous area of Jabal al-Zawiya, which serves as an outpost for the extremist group Jabhat al-Nusra (banned in Russia). The militants suffered casualties in terms of killed and wounded fighters.
According to the newspaper, the militants had previously launched mortar attacks on the settlements of Urum al-Sughra and Sheikh Ali, which are under the protection of government forces, west of Aleppo.
Since the beginning of 2023, the activities of Jabhat al-Nusra gangs have noticeably increased. According to Al Hadath, their armed attacks in northern Syria have claimed the lives of 57 civilians, including 18 children.
A significant portion of Idlib remains under the control of illegal armed groups, which receive support from Turkey. The establishment of a northern de-escalation zone in 2017 led to the relocation of militants who had refused to disarm in Eastern Ghouta near Damascus and the southern regions of the country.
