The Turkish delegation at the upcoming March 15-16 four-party talks on Syria in Moscow will focus on countering terrorism, reviving the political process in the neighboring country and continuing the meetings of the constitutional committee. This was reported by the TRT TV channel on Tuesday, citing diplomatic sources.
Turkey's delegation at the meeting will be headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Burak Akcapar. Russia will be represented by Special Representative of the President for the Middle East, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov. The Iranian delegation will be represented by Foreign Ministry's political advisor Ali Asghar Khaji, and the Syrian delegation will be represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Assad Ayman Susan.
Negotiations in Moscow will be technical – preparation for a meeting of foreign ministers of the four countries.
On December 28, 2022, the Russian, Syrian, and Turkish defense ministers held consultations in Moscow as part of the process of normalizing relations between Ankara and Damascus. At the meeting, an agreement was reached to create a joint trilateral commission. These consultations are to be followed by a meeting of the foreign ministers of the three countries, whose agenda will include talks between Turkish and Syrian Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad.
Erdogan told reporters last December 15 that he had proposed to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to hold a trilateral meeting with the Syrian leader. This summit, he said, should be preceded by talks at the level of representatives of special services, defense and foreign ministers.
