Russian MFA: Syria's sovereignty must be restored over all Syrian territory

14 October 2021

Syria's sovereignty must be restored over the entire Syrian territory, Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Vershinin said on Wednesday, answering questions from Russian reporters.

"We have consistently advocated respect for Syria's sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence. This is our principled position, on which we base all our contacts, including Turkey. Today we are talking about the need for Syria's sovereignty to be restored over all Syrian territory. The fight against terrorism is ending there, it should naturally be continued, and as for any military preparations, these preparations should take into account respect for Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity," Vershinin said.

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said last week that Russia expects Turkey to be guided by the principles of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Arab Republic in the matter of the Syrian settlement, as Ankara has said before. Referring to the presence of foreign armed forces and military units in Syria, Lavrov recalled UN Security Council resolution 2254, which clearly affirms the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic.
