The United States has grossly violated Syrian sovereignty by sending an American delegation led by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Eitan Goldrich to Al Hasakah province. This, according to the SANA news agency, was stated in a message from the Syrian Foreign Ministry sent to the UN Security Council on Wednesday.
"Damascus considers hypocritical Washington's claims that the trip is intended to alleviate the suffering of the population living in the northeastern regions and will contribute to improving the mechanism for delivering humanitarian aid," the document said.
The Syrian foreign ministry described such claims as "a cheap American hoax" and drew international attention to the fact that the US "continues to unceremoniously plunder the country's natural wealth, stealing its oil and gas, while remaining in force stifling economic sanctions."
Earlier, in a statement circulated by the SANA news agency, Damascus' foreign ministry condemned the intention of US President Joe Biden's administration to withdraw from sanctions areas not controlled by the government in the north and northeast of Syria. The document stressed that "these territories are in the hands of separatist groups and terrorist formations associated with the Turkish regime."
"Such a US move will only prolong the crisis and violence, create an atmosphere of chaos and derail a political settlement," the Syrian foreign ministry pointed out.
Support for the Kurds
On March 14, the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper reported that American diplomat Goldrich, who is in charge of the Syrian track, held a meeting in Washington with representatives of Arab and Western European states, during which he informed them about the US administration's intentions to ease the sanctions regime for the northern and northeastern regions of Syria. He explained such measures by the need to support the Kurdish "Democratic Syrian Forces", which are the allies of the United States in the war against the terrorist group "Islamic State" (banned in Russia).
In addition, as the newspaper testified, the American diplomat pointed out that Washington's decision should be regarded as a "pressure signal" on Moscow and Damascus, taking into account the events in Ukraine.
