23 September 2019

In modern realities, the main task of the special services of the CIS member states is coordination in order to combat international terrorism, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, Chairman of the Group of Strategic Vision "Russia-Islamic World" said at the XVI annual meeting of heads of security and intelligence agencies of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) members states.

Recent events in Saudi Arabia, when unmanned aerial vehicles attacked oil plants, according to the President of the Republic of Tatarstan, clearly show that high-tech threats, which were not previously perceived as real, are coming to the fore.

"Such weapons may fall into the hands of terrorists. It is possible to fight against such organizations as Al-Qaeda, Taliban, and ISIS (all three groups are outlawed in Russia) only through joint efforts", - Minnikhanov was quoted by his press service.

Therefore, as Tatarstan President noted, one of the priority tasks for today is "the formation of a tough strategy to counter international terrorism."

"We are interested in using international experience and consider it important to exchange best practices and specialists. I am sure that the joint work will make a significant contribution to the solution of the common task of ensuring the safety of our citizens", - Minnikhanov said.

The meeting was attended by Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service Sergey Naryshkin, Chairman of the Executive Committee — Executive Secretary of the CIS Sergey Lebedev, as well as representatives of the intelligence leadership of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

The main issues to be discussed are mechanisms for the exchange of information to prevent internal and external threats, as well as further steps to counter terrorism and extremism.
