Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin will visit Pakistan on October 15-16 to participate in the meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states. The meeting will be held in Islamabad, according to the press service of the Russian prime minister.
“On October 15-16, 2024, the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Mishustin, will visit the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, in the city of Islamabad, and will participate in the meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the SCO member states,” the press service reported.
The meeting will include the participation of the heads of government from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, as well as the First Vice President of Iran and a high-ranking representative from India. The attendees will discuss the state and future of trade and economic cooperation within the SCO, especially in the context of modernizing the organization's activities in response to new geopolitical realities. Coordinated approaches to addressing global economic challenges will be formalized in a joint communique.
Decisions on financial and organizational matters are also expected. Specifically, the heads of government will approve the budget, updated staff structures for the SCO Secretariat and the Executive Committee of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) in light of Belarus' membership, and a protocol amending the agreement on the formation and execution of the SCO budget from December 1, 2017.
During the Islamabad meeting, Russia will assume the chairmanship of the Council of Heads of Government. Under its chairmanship, Russia plans to enhance cooperation in the areas of digital economy, innovation, high technologies, transportation connectivity, food and energy security, financing mechanisms for project activities (including the use of national currencies for mutual settlements), environmental protection, and climate change mitigation. Special attention will be paid to implementing existing SCO strategies, conceptual and program documents, and improving the efficiency of sectoral meetings and thematic working groups.
