More than 76,000 refugees moved from Turkey to the European Union

02 March 2020

More than 76,000 migrants crossed Turkey's borders with the European Union after Ankara announced their opening, the head of the Turkish Interior Ministry Suleyman Soylu posted on Twitter.

According to him, the refugees cross the border through Edirne, a province bordering Greece and Bulgaria in the north-west of the country.

Earlier, Omer Celik, a spokesman of the ruling Turkish Justice and Development Party, said that Turkey remains committed to its migration policy but is no longer able to contain the flow of refugees from Syria.

After that, countries neighboring with Turkey strengthened controls at the border.

The heads of state and government of the EU member States agreed with Turkey on a joint plan to combat the migration crisis in mid-March 2016. It provides financial assistance to Ankara for the reception of refugees, the return to Turkey of all illegal immigrants who arrived in Greece from Turkish territory, and the reception by the European Union of legal migrants-Syrians from Turkey on the principle of "one for one".
