10 March 2021

The Moroccan Ministry of Health has approved the use of the Russian vaccine against the coronavirus Sputnik V, Artem Tsinamdzgvrishvili, a Russian trade representative to Morocco, told TASS on Wednesday.

"The Russian vaccine Sputnik V against coronavirus has been registered in Morocco for one year under an emergency use authorization for use in the kingdom," he said.

"This decision was announced by the Moroccan Minister of Health Khaled Ait Taleb during negotiations with the leadership of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), organized with the assistance of the Russian Trade Mission in Morocco with the participation of Russian Ambassador Valerian Shuvaev. At present the sides began to negotiate a contract for the supply of vaccines", - added Tsinamdzhvrishvili.

According to him, the Trade Representation together with the RDIF and the Russian Embassy in Morocco "regularly worked on building a dialogue with the Ministry of Health of the Kingdom and working on the whole range of issues on the registration of the vaccine Sputnik V."

"Given the role of the kingdom among the states of the African continent, the establishment of a long-term partnership with the Moroccan side can be a significant help in organizing supplies of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine to other African countries," the TASS reporter stressed.

Sputnik V is one of the world's top three vaccines against coronavirus in terms of the number of approvals received by state regulators. To date, Sputnik V, developed with the participation of the RDIF, has been registered by more than 40 countries with a total population of over 1.1 billion people

As of the evening of March 8, the total number of infected people in Morocco since the beginning of the pandemic has exceeded 486,000. Since March 2, 2020, when the first case of infection was recorded in the kingdom, 8,683 people have died because of the coronavirus, while more than 472,000 patients have recovered.
