On Tuesday, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita called for creating an African Union (AU) development fund to finance collective action on the continent in the field of socio-economic development. He spoke by video link to delegates at a conference taking place in Tangier on the topic of the nexus between peace, security and development.
The event is timed to Morocco's presidency of the AU Peace and Security Council, the Maghreb Arabe Presse news agency reported.
"The Kingdom of Morocco declares its commitment to reorienting efforts to further promote the triple nexus of peace, security and development in the African institutional architecture," the minister said, pointing to the need to "establish an AU development fund to finance African collective action in the field of socio-economic and human development."
Bourita also called for "exploring ways and mechanisms that can strengthen interaction and coordination among the various bodies responsible for sustainable development, peace, security and governance in Africa, in particular between the African Peace and Security Architecture, the African Governance System, the AU Development Agency, the African Development Bank.
The minister stressed that "trust is the cornerstone to launch all the unifying projects of Africa, aimed at the development and integration of the continental space."
