Morocco and Jordan share the same positions on the Palestinian issue and are in favor of preserving the Arab and Islamic identity of Jerusalem. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, said this on Monday in Amman at a joint press conference with Jordanian Foreign and Expatriates Minister Ayman Hussein Abdullah al-Safadi.
"Morocco and Jordan share the same positions on the Palestinian issue. And they are based on the Arab criteria for a solution - a two-state solution (coexistence of Palestinian and Israeli states - TASS) and the creation of an independent Palestinian state within the June 4, 1967, borders with East Jerusalem as its capital," the Maghreb Arab Press news agency quoted Bourita as saying.
He added that "Morocco supports Jordan's central role in the Palestinian question and King Abdullah II's role in the guardianship of Jerusalem's Islamic shrines." "Morocco and Jordan are working to support the residents of Jerusalem and to preserve the Arab and Islamic identity of Jerusalem," Bourita stressed.
He said the countries are coordinating within the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and in all international forums. "Jordan is a partner and ally and Morocco shares the same views on all bilateral, regional and international issues," Bourita concluded.
Moroccan authorities have traditionally paid increased attention to developments in the Middle East conflict zone, including the situation around Jerusalem. King Mohammed VI is chairman of the Jerusalem Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, whose main focus is to preserve the spiritual and civilizational significance of the city and defend its role as a focus and promoter of the values of tolerance and peace.
