06 April 2020

Mosques in the capital region (Moscow and the Moscow region), which have been closed since March 18 due to the spread of coronavirus infection, will not reopen until April 30. The corresponding order was signed by the Chairman of the Religious Board of Muslims of the Russian Federation and the Russian Muftis Council, Mufti Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin.

The previous order provided for the closure of religious institutions until April 10, with the possibility of extension.

"However, if the situation improves before the deadline, the restrictions will be lifted earlier. All this time, five-time and Friday prayers will be performed by duty imams and a small number of clergy and employees, and the round-the-clock reading of the Koran in the walls of the Moscow Cathedral mosque will continue," the statement reads.
