Mukhametshin: Russia and Gambia Have Prospects to Expand Mutual Cooperation

08 February

Deputy Chairman of the State Duma's Committee on International Affairs, Farit Mukhametshin, recently engaged in discussions with Ambassador of the Republic of the Gambia to Russia Ebrima Ceesay. The meeting marked the occasion of the  60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

"As we approach the milestone of  60 years since establishing diplomatic ties, we recognize the substantial opportunities for enhancing mutually advantageous cooperation. This could include broadening Gambia's connections with various regions within Russia," Mukhametshin stated.

The senator underscored the alignment of Russia and Gambia's stances on global issues, particularly concerning the Middle East and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. "We extend our appreciation for Gambia's empathy towards the situation in Ukraine and its advocacy for a just political resolution, a perspective not fully supported by the Kiev government and its Western allies," Mukhametshin remarked.

Inter-parliamentary exchanges between the Federation Council and the Gambian National Assembly have been intensifying. Notably, Gambian lawmakers took part in the "Russia-Africa" international parliamentary conferences hosted by Russia in  2019 and  2023.

The dialogue also touched upon the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), with the Gambia currently spearheading the organization and gearing up for the  15th OIC summit in Banjul later this month. Russian observers will attend the event, reflecting the strategic vision group's commitment to fostering ties with the OIC.

Mukhametshin, who chairs the Group of Strategic Vision "Russia - Islamic World," highlighted the significance of bolstering cooperation with the OIC. Meanwhile, Ambassador Ceesay advocated for the continued expansion of mutually beneficial relations between the Gambia and Russia, thanking the Russian leadership for aid in addressing food security challenges across Africa.

The meeting was attended by Ayrat Akhmetov, the Head of the International Relations Department of the GSV "Russia-Islamic World", and Ali Khasanov, the Group's Advisor.
