Muslims Commemorate the Night of Miraj

27 January

On the night of January 26 to 27, Muslims around the world observed the sacred Night of Miraj, which marks the Prophet Muhammad’s journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and his ascension to the heavens.

“With the sunset on January 26 (the 26th of Rajab), Muslims began celebrating Lailat al-Isra wal-Miraj, one of the holiest nights in Islam. This night honors the Prophet Muhammad’s journey from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, followed by his ascension to the Seventh Heaven. These extraordinary events hold deep spiritual significance for Muslims,” the Spiritual Assembly of Muslims of Russia (SAMR) shared with TASS.

SAMR encouraged Muslims to use this night as a time for spiritual reflection, prioritizing inner growth over worldly pursuits, and to focus on good deeds that benefit others.

According to Islamic tradition, on this night, the Prophet Muhammad was near the Kaaba in Mecca when the angel Jibreel (Gabriel) appeared to him, cleansed his heart, and prepared him for the journey. Riding a creature called Buraq, the Prophet traveled to Jerusalem with Jibreel and then ascended to the heavens.
