National vote on amendments to the Constitution will be held on April 22

27 February 2020

The national vote on amendments to the Constitution will be held on April 22, the head of the State Duma Committee on State Building and Legislation Pavel Krasheninnikov announced.

This date, according to him, was proposed at the meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin with the working group on the preparation of amendments by its co-Chairman Andrey Klishas.

"By April 19, the Orthodox fast ends, and on April 24, the Holy month of Ramadan begins, so April 22 is the optimal date", he said.

At a regular meeting, Vladimir Putin recalled that the current legislation allows for the adoption of amendments after approval by the State Duma, the Federation Council and two-thirds of regional legislative assemblies, but stressed the importance of a popular vote.

"I, bearing in mind the importance of these amendments, proposed that this law on amendments should come into force only after the results of the all-Russian General vote, which is nothing but a plebiscite. This is the most important thing, and we must observe this. After that, there will be a presidential decree on making these amendments to the Constitution", the head of state said.
