NATO may expand its presence in Iraq

01 April 2020

During the meeting, which will take place on Thursday, April 2, the Foreign Ministers of NATO countries may decide to strengthen the mission in Iraq. This was stated at a press conference in Brussels by Alliance Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.

"The Ministers will discuss the role of NATO in the fight against international terrorism, in particular, within the framework of our training mission in Iraq. I expect that we will make a decision to expand this mission, in particular, take responsibility for performing certain functions of the international coalition," he said.

Earlier it was reported that NATO is considering the parameters of the expanded Alliance mission in Iraq and is conducting appropriate consultations with the country's authorities.

In addition, the Alliance is likely to take over all current training activities that were previously carried out by the forces of the international coalition under the leadership of the United States.
