NATO Secretary General announced its intention "to be firm" in dialogue with Russia

02 April 2019

In an interview with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that he intends to show firmness in the dialogue with Russia and take as a basis the experience of Norway during the Cold War.

«It is possible to cooperate with Russia, but you need to be firm, stick together and not confuse the dialogue with weakness. This was what Norway did during the Cold War, and in the north we cooperated in the fields of energy, fisheries, defense and the division of the Barents Sea», Stoltenberg noted, in particular.

The main task of the alliance, he said, is to avoid a new cold war and the arms race, which in turn, will require a «conversation with Russia».

According to Stoltenberg, he doesn’t see an immediate threat of an attack on any of the NATO countries, although he believes that Russia «is investing a lot in its military power, uses military force against its neighbours Georgia and Ukraine, is trying to interfere in democratic processes and is responsible for cyber attacks».
