Kazakhstan's first president Nursultan Nazarbayev congratulated members of the ruling Nur Otan ("Light of the Fatherland") party that he heads on winning the elections to the Majilis, the lower house of the republic's parliament.

"Dear fellow party members, I congratulate everyone on the convincing victory of the Nur Otan party in these elections. Preliminary exit poll results show that Kazakhstanis relate further development of our country and improvement of welfare to our party," he said on Monday, speaking at the party's national campaign headquarters. Khabar 24 channel broadcast the speech.

Nazarbayev considers it symbolic that the elections were held in the year of the republic's 30th anniversary of independence. "The elections were held in difficult conditions of pandemic and economic crisis, which could not bypass Kazakhstan. This is a new global reality for us," he stated.

In such a situation, according to the party chairman, only a consolidated society united around a single political force can win. "Our victory [in the elections] is the result of the coordinated work of each party member. We conducted a technical, effective campaign. New leaders with real credibility with the population have appeared in our ranks," Nazarbayev said.

On Sunday, Kazakhstan held elections to the Majilis, an election based on party lists. Five out of the six parties registered in the country participated: the People's Party of Kazakhstan, the ruling Nur Otan Party, the Auyl (Village) People's Patriotic Democratic Party, The Ak Zhol (Bright Path) Democratic Party, and the Adal (Honesty) Party. The CEC intends to announce preliminary results on January 11. All election procedures must be completed by January 17.

The Nur Otan leads in the polls, receiving about 72% of the vote, according to two opinion polls. According to exit polls, the Ak Zhol Democratic Party and the People's Party of Kazakhstan, which passed the required 7% barrier, may also be included in the future composition of the lower house of parliament. All three of these political forces are represented in the current composition of Majilis.
