Nearly 100 University Professors in Gaza Killed in Israeli Attacks

16 February

According to a representative of the independent human rights organization Euro-Med Monitor, approximately  100 university professors in the Gaza Strip have been killed due to Israeli forces' bombing and shelling. The representative stated that three university rectors and  95 university teachers, including  17 professors and  59 PhDs, were among the victims of the attack.

Human rights activists reported that the Israeli military operation has left around  88,000 Palestinian students deprived of the opportunity to continue their education. Additionally,  555 scholarship holders from educational institutions outside the enclave are prohibited from leaving Gaza to pursue their studies.

Euro-Med Monitor highlighted that the buildings of five out of the six universities in the Palestinian Strip have been severely damaged by Israeli bombardment, with three of them completely destroyed. The preliminary data from the organization indicates that the damage to Gaza's higher education system, caused by Israeli forces since the beginning of the escalation, amounts to at least $200 million.

The situation in the Middle East has escalated significantly since October  7,  2023, when fighters from the Palestinian movement Hamas infiltrated Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip. The group claimed the attack was a response to Israeli actions against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Israel imposed a complete blockade on Gaza and launched retaliatory strikes on the Strip and parts of Lebanon and Syria, with clashes also occurring in the West Bank.
