Nearly 36,000 illegal migrants were apprehended in Turkey over the past two months, with 17,300 of them subsequently deported, Minister of the Republic's Interior Ministry Ali Yerlikaya reported.
"Over the course of two months, we conducted 2,548 operations, resulting in the detention of 1,385 individuals involved in organizing illegal migration, with 372 of them being arrested. In total, 35,867 illegal migrants were apprehended, and 17,258 have been deported from the country. Deportation efforts are ongoing. Our commitment to combating illegal migration remains unwavering," the minister posted on the social media platform X (previously Twitter).
Having taken on the role of head of the Turkish interior ministry in June, Yerlikaya pledged to address the issue of illegal migration in the country, particularly in the densely populated city of Istanbul, within a few months.
Previously, the interior minister had indicated that approximately 4.9 million refugees are residing in the country, with 3 million of them being Syrian citizens. Specific statistics regarding the number of illegal migrants in Turkey have not been disclosed.
