Nebenzya: Russia’s Position in UN Remains Firm Despite Western Pressure

27 March

Russia’s position at the United Nations remains strong and continues to grow, despite Western attempts to undermine it, according to Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN. Speaking via video link at the International Scientific and Diplomatic Congress, he emphasized that no external pressure would weaken Russia’s influence within the organization. The congress was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Yalta Conference.

“I can say with full confidence that, despite all the political maneuvers of our Western counterparts, Russia’s authority among UN member states remains unshaken. Recent global turbulence has not weakened our standing—in fact, it has only strengthened it,” Nebenzya stated. “Russia’s firm and principled stance in defending its national interests has earned increasing respect, not only from the Global South but from a wider international community.”

The Russian diplomat highlighted a growing shift in the UN, where voices from the Global South are becoming more prominent—often to the frustration of former colonial powers. “Regardless of how the world changes, Russia’s role as a founding member of the UN remains undeniable. We are seen not only as a guardian of the organization’s core principles but also as a nation that stands for justice, protects the vulnerable, and challenges those who seek to impose their will for geopolitical gain,” he added.

Nebenzya also criticized Western nations for eroding the principles that emerged from the Yalta system of international relations. “Unfortunately, we are witnessing a deliberate effort to dismantle the values that shaped the post-war global order. In an attempt to cling to its fading dominance, the collective West disregards international law, resorts to coercion, imposes sanctions, and applies double standards,” he concluded.
