Nebenzya: The International Community Needs to Pressure Both Israel and the US

21 May

The international community should exert pressure on both Israel and its primary ally, the United States, in the context of the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, stated Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, on Monday.

"Under these circumstances, the international community needs to continue exerting pressure on both West Jerusalem and its main ally, Washington," Nebenzya said during a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Rafah.

Nebenzya assessed that the prospects for shifting the conflict to a political and diplomatic track "appear elusive." "We see that the current Israeli leadership intends to continue military actions despite the increasingly apparent impossibility of achieving all the stated goals of its operation. Unfortunately, such stubbornness also threatens the lives of Israeli hostages, with each passing day reducing the chances for their families to see their loved ones alive," the Russian diplomat added.

The Permanent Representative noted that the United States recently approved a bill to allocate more than $26 billion to Israel, "which is nearly eight times the amount allocated annually by the Americans to this country." "Thus, Israel will receive new bombs and rockets to destroy Palestinian civilians. This is how the United States actually cares about peace in the Middle East," Nebenzya summarized.
