Russia believes that the place of the radical Taliban movement (banned in the Russian Federation) in the political life of the country should be taken into account in resolving the situation in Afghanistan, Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said at a briefing on Wednesday.
"We are actively involved in all efforts to establish peace in Afghanistan," he said. - "We should do it as soon as possible because the Taliban claims that they control 80 percent of the territory of Afghanistan. I don't know how accurate those figures are, and I cannot comment on them. But a solution cannot be found without taking into account that the Taliban have again become part of the political landscape in Afghanistan".
Nebenzya noted that the situation in Afghanistan is changing rapidly, including due to the withdrawal of US troops. "We have yet to see what this country will look like after the final American withdrawal," he added.
United States President Joe Biden on April 14 announced plans to begin withdrawing US troops from Afghanistan in May and complete it by September 11. The decision differs from Washington's commitment to bring its troops home by May 1, 2021, which was enshrined in an agreement reached last February in the Qatari capital of Doha by the previous US administration and the Taliban. The Taliban have launched an offensive, occupying a number of district centers and encircling others.
