Russia proposes to combine the efforts of the Moscow consultations on Afghanistan with the format of the expanded "troika" (Russia, China, the United States and Afghanistan), Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said on Tuesday, speaking at a Security Council meeting on Afghanistan.
Nebenzya said that on March 18, another meeting of the expanded group of the troika - Russia, China, the United States and Afghanistan - took place in Moscow. Leaders of the Taliban (banned in Russia) also took part in it. "We expect that the Moscow findings will be used by the Afghans in discussing the substantive issues on the agenda in order to achieve the long-awaited progress in the inter-Afghan negotiations," he said.
"We are in favor of pairing the efforts of the expanded troika with the work of the Moscow consultation format, which, along with Afghanistan itself, brings together all IRA neighbors without exception, as well as the United States," Nebenzya stressed.
The meeting of the enlarged troika on the Afghan settlement at the level of special envoys took place in Moscow on March 18. A joint statement was issued based on its results. In particular, the troika member countries called on the parties to the Afghan conflict to conclude a peace agreement and reduce the level of violence in the country.
