One new and one upgraded Tu-160 strategic missile carrier will be produced in 2022, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov told journalists during a working visit to the Kazan S.P. Gorbunov Aviation Plant (a branch of PJSC Tupolev).
"At the same time we inspected the production of combat aircraft. Kazan, as you know, is the main plant that produces strategic aviation for our Air Force. Here, thank God, everything is going according to plan, and production is ready. This year we expect one modernized and one new Tu-160. I think the plant is fully prepared for production here," he said.
During the visit, the deputy prime minister toured the production facilities of the aircraft factory and discussed its future production plans.
It was previously reported that two equipped with new weapons Tu-160M will join the long-range aviation of Russia in 2022.
The Tu-160 (unofficial Russian name "White Swan") is a Soviet and then Russian supersonic strategic bomber-missile carrier aircraft with variable wing geometry. Along with the Tu-95MS, it forms the basis of the modern fleet of long-range aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces. It is designed to destroy nuclear and conventional targets in remote areas. Tu-160 is the largest supersonic aircraft in the history of military aviation.
