New round of inter-Syrian talks started in Nur-Sultan

The thirteenth round of inter-Syrian talks started in the Kazakh capital. A number of bilateral meetings are scheduled for today. A plenary session will be tomorrow.

 

 


There already was a meeting of Russian and Iranian delegations.

 

 


On the Russian side, it was attended by  Russia’s Special Envoy to Syria Alexander Lavrentiev and Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin. The Iranian delegation is headed by Foreign Minister’s Senior Aide for political affairs Ali Asghar Khaji.

 

 


All parties to the negotiations, including the delegation of official Damascus and the armed opposition, arrived in Nur-Sultan.

 

 


During the talks, the delegation of the armed opposition of Syria intends to demand the cessation of hostilities in Idlib and the release of prisoners, the official representative of the opposition Yasser Abdel Raheem stated.

 

 


The UN Secretary-General’s Syria envoy, Geir Pedersen, is not going to attend the talks due to health reasons. The UN delegation will be led by his deputy.

 

 


For the first time during the upcoming meeting, the delegations of Iraq and Lebanon will take part as observers.
