New Syrian Leadership to Make First Overseas Visit to Turkey

08 January

Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leader of Syria's new administration, is set to make his first international trip to Turkey, according to Yeni Şafak. The visit, initially planned for the coming days, has been postponed due to scheduling changes.

During his trip, al-Sharaa is expected to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. As the newspaper reports, the Syrian leader intends to express gratitude to Erdoğan for Turkey's support in the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's administration.

Yeni Şafak also notes that the first foreign official to visit Damascus following the opposition's rise to power in Syria was Turkey's intelligence chief, Ibrahim Kalin. He was later followed by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
