Niger Embarks on Ambitious Program to Achieve Food Sovereignty

26 July

Niger has launched a large-scale irrigation program aimed at attaining food sovereignty, according to an announcement by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the head of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) made on the first anniversary of the CNSP's rise to power.

"Achieving sovereignty requires, first and foremost, utilizing our national resources for the benefit of our population," the head of state was quoted as saying by the Niger Press Agency.

"It is with this goal in mind that I have initiated a comprehensive irrigation program across all regions of the country, which aims to ensure the optimal use of our agricultural and livestock potential to secure our food sovereignty," Tchiani stated.

He emphasized that this "flagship program" is being implemented through self-financing and promises to yield satisfactory results.
On July 26, 2023, a group of soldiers from the presidential guard staged a mutiny and announced the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum from power. The CNSP, led by the commander of the guard, Abdourahamane Tchiani, was formed to govern the country.

Despite possessing rich mineral deposits, Niger remains one of the poorest nations in the world.
