Niger Military Terminates Military Pact with Benin

13 September 2023

The rebels who have taken control of Niger have declared the termination of a military pact with Benin. They accuse Benin of permitting the deployment of troops on its territory for a potential military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This information was reported by Reuters.

The rebel faction in Niger issued a statement, which was broadcasted on national television, alleging that Benin had given authorization for the deployment of troops and military equipment in preparation for a potential intervention by ECOWAS. In response to this, the military junta in Niger "has decided to terminate the military cooperation agreement with Benin."
