Nigeria has registered the Russian vaccine against coronavirus Sputnik V, now bringing the total population of approved countries to more than 3.7 billion people or about half the world's population, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) said.
"The Russian Direct Investment Fund ... announces the registration of the Russian vaccine against Sputnik V coronavirus by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control of Nigeria (NAFDAC)," the statement said.
Nigeria became the 68th state to approve the Sputnik V vaccine. "The total population of all countries that have approved Sputnik V is more than 3.7 billion people or about half of the world's population," the fund estimated.
Data from regulators in several countries, including Argentina, Serbia, Bahrain, Hungary, Mexico and others, demonstrate that Sputnik V is one of the safest and most effective vaccines against the coronavirus.
"Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, and approval of Sputnik V will allow one of the safest and most effective vaccines in the world to protect human health. Sputnik V is based on a proven platform of human adenovirus vectors and has been successfully used in more than 50 countries. Approval of the vaccine in Nigeria will allow the country to fight the pandemic more successfully," commented Kirill Dmitriev, the head of RDIF.
Sputnik V ranks second in the world by the number of approvals received by state regulators.
