An oil production vessel used to extract, store and unload oil exploded in southern Nigeria, the Vanguard newspaper reported on Thursday, citing a statement of the SEPCOL management company.
The explosion occurred February 2 on the Escravos River in Delta state, the newspaper noted. There were 10 people on the floating facility, which was used to store and unload oil, at the time. The explosion followed a fire at the unit, capable of handling 22,000 barrels of oil per day and storing another 2 million barrels. At the moment the company has not reported possible deaths or injuries.
In turn, the Online Nigeria news portal reported that seven people from the rig are missing. Their search is ongoing. Another three victims have been rescued. The rig itself sank near the oil terminal in Ouapokiti.
