Niger's Foreign Minister States President's Release as Condition for Talks with Rebels

15 August 2023

Niger's Foreign Minister Hassoumi Massaoudou has stated that negotiations with the rebels will only be possible if they release President Mohamed Bazoum and restore his authority.

"Once President Bazoum is released and his powers are restored, negotiations can proceed," he said in an interview with France 24. Massaoudou stressed that the option of military intervention "is being considered alongside the negotiation agenda."

The foreign minister of Niger also expressed certainty that Bazoum's release will happen. "There is no alternative," he added.
