Omani Foreign Minister Advocates for De-escalation in Region During Meeting with Iranian Counterpart

08 April

In a recent meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, who was visiting Muscat on official business, Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad bin Hamoud al-Busaidi called for de-escalation in the region.

"We support efforts to de-escalate the region and resolve various problems and conflicts. We advocate that the voice of reason should prevail. The Palestinian issue is the main problem we are working on, as the brotherly Palestinian people are suffering due to the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip," Oman News Agency quoted al-Busaidi as saying.

Abdollahian's visit to Muscat marked the beginning of his regional tour, with Oman being his first stop. During his stay, he also met with Mohammed Abdel Salam, a spokesman for Yemen's rebel Houthi movement Ansar Allah. Iran's foreign ministry confirmed that Abdollahian's tour included Oman, without disclosing the other countries on his itinerary. According to Al Watan, the Iranian diplomatic chief was scheduled to visit Damascus the following day.

The visit by Abdollahian comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region, following Israel's attack on Iran's consulate in Damascus, which resulted in the death of seven officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including Generals Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi.

"The attack on the Iranian consulate building in Damascus has opened a new chapter in the process of fueling war and expanding the scope of conflict in the region," al-Busaidi emphasized during his meeting with Abdollahian in Muscat.
