OPCW ignored 200 notes from Russia on terrorist provocations in Syria

02 November 2021

The technical secretariat of the Organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons (OPCW) left unanswered about 200 notes verbales from Russia about provocations in Syria prepared by terrorists, the Russia's ambassador to the Netherlands and Russia's permanent representative to the OPCW, Alexander Shulgin, said on Tuesday during an online briefing.

He stressed that the Syrian authorities have repeatedly reported to the technical secretariat that provocations using chemical weapons are being prepared by terrorists. "If memory serves, we sent 200 verbal notes to the technical secretariat, and believe me, the technical secretariat did not respond to any of those notes," Shulgin said.

The Russian permanent representative also recalled that in the summer of 2020, a report of a UN investigative team came out, which contained information about the use of chemical weapons by terrorists.

"There are such groups operating on the territory of Syria, there are skills, technology and chemical components. How did they "leak out" from the arsenals of Saddam Hussein's army? How was the transfer of these chemicals carried out? This is a question for the Americans and the British, who were on Iraqi territory and who allegedly cared about stability and security," the diplomat added.
