More than 15,600 buildings in southern Lebanon have been damaged or destroyed over the course of a year-long conflict between Israel and the Shiite group Hezbollah, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Lebanon.
Research conducted by the UN-Habitat program, which analyzed satellite imagery from seven districts in the Nabatieh and South Lebanon governorates, estimates that the fighting resulted in over 8 million tons of building debris.
The report states, “A total of 15,633 buildings were partially or completely destroyed, accounting for 6.6% of pre-war structures. The hardest-hit areas were Marjayoun, Bint Jbeil, and Tyre (Sur).”
On November 27, 2023, the first ceasefire agreement since the onset of hostilities came into effect. US President Joe Biden announced that the terms of the agreement between Israel and Hezbollah include the restoration of Lebanese army and state security forces’ control over the country’s territory within 60 days. Following this, Israeli forces are to gradually withdraw from Lebanon.
