Since October 2023, more than 700,000 tons of humanitarian aid for residents of the Gaza Strip have been delivered to Egypt, according to the Al-Youm as-Sabia news portal.
A source from the North Sinai governorate administration reported that the Egyptian authorities received 655,520 tons of humanitarian supplies over the past nine months, distributed via more than 27,000 trucks. Additionally, over the same period, 660 aircraft landing at El Arish airport near the Gaza border delivered 17,000 tons of aid. At least 20 ships called at El Arish port, carrying 34,505 tons of supplies destined for Gaza. In total, at least 707,025 tons of humanitarian aid have arrived in Egypt since last October.
The Egyptian Red Crescent Society has been responsible for receiving, distributing, and attempting to deliver these supplies to the Gaza Strip, coordinating closely with their Palestinian counterparts to ensure effective and rapid distribution.
The Rafah land crossing, the main entry point for humanitarian aid and the transfer of sick and injured Palestinians, has been virtually inactive for about two months. On May 7, the Israeli military took control of the Palestinian side of the crossing, prompting Cairo to announce on May 11 that it would not coordinate further actions regarding the land crossing with Israel. Subsequently, the Egyptian authorities held Israel fully responsible for the closure of the crossing and the disruption of humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza residents. Currently, most humanitarian supplies are delivered to Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing, with Egypt remaining a major contributor.
