20 May

Russia and Central Asian countries continue to maintain close cooperation on combating terrorist threats in the region, Deputy Director of the Third Department of the CIS countries of the Russian Foreign Ministry Sergei Overchenko said during a discussion at the Valdai international discussion club.

"We continue close cooperation with Central Asian countries on countering drug and terrorist threats," he said.

Overchenko stressed that Russia has a clear understanding that security in the region is "significantly affected by challenges related to the processes in neighboring Afghanistan, the activities of international terrorist organizations in that country, as well as challenges related to provocative actions of external forces." In addition, he noted that "there is effective cooperation between defense and law enforcement agencies, special services, and regular meetings between the secretaries of the Security Council of Russia and the Central Asian states".
